In Chapter 10 of Animal Farm, what had happened to the animals' promised rewards?

All of the animals in Animal Farm were promised a leisurely retirement by their pig leaders once they reached a certain age, but they had already witnessed the type of retirement that Boxer received (a trip to the glue factory). Clover continued to work, even though she was two years beyond her retirement age. In fact, none of the animals had ever been honored with their promised retirement, and the idea of not working in old age had long been forgotten. Only old Benjamin remembered every detail about the history of Animal Farm, and he reminded the animals that things on the farm had never been worse.
