I can see why you ask this question and it is an important one. Here are some perspectives that might help you in answering this question.

First, any society that protects the rights of religion is a society that is tolerant, which is a good thing. For example, America has the freedom of religion and for the most part does not offer a hard time to people who have had abortions or seek abortions. If you think of countries that persecute religions, there are also usually strong taboos when it comes to women's rights, like places in the Middle East. In light of this, a society that protects the rights of religions is a society that will most likely be more tolerant of different values.

Second, most religions have a golden rule. This is to love neighbor as you would love yourself. For this reason, most religions at its best will be able to agree to disagree and allow for freedom of choice when it comes to thing like abortion.

In light of these points, my answer is that only when a society allows for the freedom of religions can there be a society that tolerates different choices. A step to curb religion is a step towards tyranny.
