Covetous is an adjective defined as "inordinately or wrongly desirous of wealth or possessions; greedy" or "eagerly desirous." Covetousness is the noun related to the adjective, naming the condition or state of being covetous.
Possibly the best or most widely known use of the word "covet" comes from the King James and later translations of the Bible. As the last of the Ten Commandments given to Moses, Exodus 20:17 states
You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbor's. (RSV)
Covetousness means desiring something that is not yours, but it goes beyond a casual desire. Covetousness is craving that something else to such a great degree that it becomes a consuming thought, driving out rational thought and reasonable relationships as it leads a person to sinful means of obtaining the desired item.
To covet something is to endanger your soul by drawing you into forbidden actions in an effort to satisfy the covetousness.
