The assessment process in substance abuse is the process--the steps and procedures--through which a patient's degree of, extent of, motivation for, and type of substance abuse is determined. It is also determined whether there are any other individuals, like children in the home, who may be negatively impacted or endangered by the abuser's substance abuse. Key elements integral to successful assessment are "sensitivity, validity, and accuracy."
