The range is the difference between the highest and lowest values in a set.

The set we have here is 7.1, 6.8, 7.6, 7.1, 7.4, 6.8, 7, and 6.7.

The highest value is: 7.6 and the lowest value is 6.7.

So the range is 7.6 - 6.7 which equals 0.9.

0.9 is lower that 2, so the coffee machine is reliable.

A coffee machine is considered reliable if the range of amounts of coffee it dispenses is less than 2 fl.oz. In 8 tries a particular machine dispenses the amounts lying in the set {7.1, 6.8, 7.6, 7.1, 7.4, 6.8, 7, 6.7}

The range of the amounts dispensed is equal to the difference between the largest and smallest amounts dispensed.

This is 7.6 - 6.7 = 0.9 fl. oz.

As 0.9 fl. oz. is less than 2 fl. oz. the machine can be called a reliable one.
