If you are looking for a story with irony, "The Necklace," by Guy de Maupassant is a a great story. Madame Loisel loses what she believes is a valuable necklace. The necklace was borrowed. She borrows money to replace the necklace and works ten long years to pay it back. After she has struggled to pay back the money, working hard scrubbing floors, she has aged tremendously. Madame Loisel runs into Madame Forestier, the lady she borrowed the necklace from ten years earlier. Madame Loisel tells Madame Forestier the truth.
She tells her that she lost her necklace but replaced it with an exact copy worth ten thousand francs. Madame Forestier can only sigh. She adds that the borrowed necklace was a fake. The irony is in the fact that Madame Loisel worked ten years to pay for a replaced necklace that had been fake all along.
Another good short story is "The Interlopers" by Saki. This story tells of a feud that has existed between two families. The Gradwitz family has been feuding with the Znaeym family for years. They have argued over land:
The two characters in ‘‘The Interlopers,’’ Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym, hate each other for no other reason than they have inherited a feud from their grandfathers surrounding a piece of land.
The argument landed both families in court, but the Gradwitz family won the rights to the land. Still, Georg Znaeym has disputed the court's ruling and has hunted (trespassed) on this land for years.
One dark night, Gradwitz sensed that Znaeym was hunting on his land. He goes in search of Znaeym. The two enemies run into each other. Face to face, with guns in hand, the two enemies think about shooting each other. Then lightning strikes tree. The tree falls on Gradwitz and Znaeym, pinning them close to one another. The two have time to think. Gradwitz decides to end the feud. He suggests to Znaeym that they end the feud and become friends. Georg Znaeym thinks it over and agrees. Now, the two just wait for the search party to find them. Someone is coming close to them. At first, they think it is the search party. In the end, it is a pack of wolves. The feud is over but the end of the story leaves the reader guessing. Will the pack of wolves attack the two men?
This story shows what greed can do. It can lead to hatred between families. The ironic ending leaves the reader guessing what will happen to Gradwitz and Znaeym. As fate would have it, the two enemies who became friends are now left to a pack of wolves.
(Hope these two story ideas help).
