Can anyone please tell me when the new day starts, is it on the 1st or 12th chime of midnight?

I am especially interested in the new year and when that starts. We have an ongoing argument in our house, some say its on the first chime and some say its the 12th.

Not being familiar with the chiming type of clocks, I would imagine that based on the military time method, 2400 would be mid-night the same day, while one second after mid-night would start the next day. 00:00:01.  You could use the links below to see the official US or Universal time and just see which chime begins the new day.  Of course you'd need a computer close to the clock you're using and make sure the clock is in sync with the online official time.  Good Luck!  Sounds like a good way to make this a scientific investigation.

The first moment of the day is midnight.  Remember that the first number is zero, not one.  We all recognize this reality when we observe the start of a New Year at midnight, not at one second after midnight.
