One prominent proposed amendment is a balanced budget amendment. This amendment would require the federal government to spend no more than it takes in in revenue in any given year.
One of the major problems in the United States today is that he federal budget is badly out of balance. We have been running large deficits every year and have therefore run up a tremendously large national debt. Many American feel that this is a serious problem.
Over the years, Congress has tried various means of ensuring that the budget will be balanced. However, none of these has worked in any real way. The federal government has had very few balanced budgets in the last few decades. Therefore, many people think that there is only one thing that can be done. They feel that it is necessary to have a constitutional amendment that will require balanced budgets so that there will be no way for Congress to engage in deficit spending. This, they feel, is the only possible way to put an end to our budgetary problems once and for all.
