The Equal Rights Amendment prevents denial of rights on the basis of sex.
Proponents say it will ensure that women and men are treated equally under the law. This is necessary because there is lax enforcement of the equal protection clauses of the 5th and 14th Amendments, particularly in Southern States.
Opponents counter that because there are equal protection clauses in the 5th and 14th Amendments the ERA is redundant. Some even claim that this moves women out of their "appropriate roles in society."
Pros: Women receive equal consideration in Divorces, chauvinism will be reduced, true equality will be achieved.
Cons: It denies the biological differences between men and women, it denies the complementarity of men and women, it will undermine marriage and family.
