The boy has $3 with him and can use it to buy either 4 chocolates and 1 ice cream or 1 chocolate and 2 ice creams. Let the price of a chocolate be C and that of an ice cream be I. From the information given:

4C + I = 3 ...(1)

C + 2I = 3 ...(2)

(2) - 2*(1)

=> C - 8C + 2I - 2I = 3 - 6

=> -7C = -3

=> C = 3/7

=> C `~~` $0.43

Substitute in (2)

=> 2I = 3 - 3/7

=> I = 18/14 = 9/7

=> I `~~` 1.29

The cost of a chocolate is $0.43 and that of an ice cream is $1.29
