When speaking about consumer information such as that collected by websites on the Internet or by medical facilities on patients, two of the primary regulations relate to purpose.
Information must be collected and may only be collected for a stated purpose for which the consumer or patient has given expressed permission in either an implicit or explicit form (e.g., knowingly a website that uses cookie or signing a document granting permission).
Information must be disposed of as soon as the express purpose for its collection is no longer applicable.
