An object that has a mass of 0.500 kg is suspended by a wire.  An upward force of 5.0 N is applied to the wire.  

What is the unbalanced force acting on the object?

What is the objects acceleration?

An object that has a mass of 0.5 kg is suspended by a wire.  An upward force of 5.0 N is applied to the wire.

There are two forces acting on the object. One of them is a downward force due to the gravitational attraction between the Earth and the object, this is equal to 0.5*9.8 = 4.9 N. The second force is the upward force of 5 N applied on the object. The unbalanced force acting on the object is 0.1 N in an upward direction.

The acceleration due to this force is equal to 0.1/0.5 = 0.2 m/s^2 in the upward direction.
