I am a first year Nursing student and i am struggling on blood pressure measurement. I need a clue to be able reading accurately the figures.

Ideally the blood pressure should be taken either in lying position or sitting position

Ask the patient to relax for 5 to 10 minutes before taking the reading.

STEPS:

Introduce your self to the patient

Explain him what you are going to do.

Tale consent from the patient

Apply the cuff properly over the arm

Place the diaphragm of the stethoscope accurately above the brachial artery. It should lie medialy to the bicep tendon 3 cm above the cubital fossa

Inflate it upto 180 mm Hg approximately or so

Deflate it slowly at a rate of 2 - 4 mmHg per second

The point at which you hear the sound is the systolic pressure. keep deflating until the sound disappears again. this point represents the diastolic pressure.

Deflate it completely and remove the cuff
