There is no specific date given as the setting for the story, though there are several clues that place it sometime between the holocaust and the actual date of its publication, 1965.  Ms. Turpin gives some clue, although there are of course still those with similar feelings today, in her hierarchy of racial status but also in the fact that there are black professionals (the dentist for example) who are better off than she is, suggesting that she either lives in a place that historically has been more integrated and open or perhaps a newly integrated southern city, etc.
