I think there are two main reasons. First, we are rich enough now that we can eat nutritious diets even without having any meat. Second, we live in a time when we are rich enough to care about things like being nice to animals and conserving natural resources. In short, because we are rich, we are able to think about things like being vegetarian where, not so long ago, we were just trying to get by.
I am vegetarian, but I have not always been. My mom has been ever since she was young. I am a vegetarian simply because I have never much liked the taste of meat. Since I don't like meat, it seemed a natural choice. However, you do have to be more careful with your diet. You have to be sure to get enough protein and nitrates. I do eat fish, eggs, and dairy though.
Another reason that some choose vegetarian diets is related to the costs of meat production.
Cows and pigs and other livestock that are raised for consumption have to be fed quite a lot of food. I recently saw the figure that cattle (being raised for human consumption) eat enough grain and other foodstuff to feed over eight billion people each year.
With some people starving, there are people who see statistics like this as a good reason to be vegetarian.
There are a number of reasons for people to not eat meat. For a large portion of the world's population, meat is too expensive; in areas where electricity and refrigeration are difficult to access, this is made worse by the fact that it costs money to store meat as well as to buy it.
Some people avoid eating meat because they are not comfortable with the idea of an animal dying on their behalf. This idea of vegetarian compassion also extends to several religious groups; Jainists and many Hindus do not eat meat for this reason.
Some avoid meat out of concern for the environment; according to the Vegan Society, 18% of all industrially produced greenhouse gases are created by the commercial production of meat.
Some people become vegetarian because they do not like meat, or they are trying to avoid the hormones and antibiotics that are used in the meat industry, or out of health concerns. People who eat a lot of meat are at higher risk for some forms of parasites and food-borne illnesses, and animal products are the major source of saturated fats in most people's diets.
There are various reasons to why people change into vegetarian diet. I don't like meat and so i don't eat meat but i 'm not completely vegetarian. There might also be some religions that don't allow meat. And also in today's world every object and animal have their own rights; it's a crime to disturb other's rights for one's sake.
Some people like this mode of eating because they consume less saturated fats which are generally in animal products like meat and butter. This is heart-healthy. They also get more vitamins and minerals as well as fiber. Fiber is good for the proper functioning of the digestive tract and also helps to reduce the absorption of cholesterol. Vegetarians need to be aware that they need to eat complete proteins however, and must substitute animal protein with either nuts, legumes, beans and rice or other high protein grains/seeds or products.
