Relating to efforts made by the Federal Government to rebuild the country after the Civil War: What were some of the gains that African Americans made during the period?

According to the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, African Americans exercised their voting rights in large numbers; they themselves were elected to public office as "sheriffs, mayors, legislators, Congressmen, and Senators"; education was provided through the construction of public schools for children of the former slavery culture; in addition they held wage-paying jobs in farming and in some of the new enterprises that were opening like telegraph, bridges and railroads.
