According to the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, African Americans exercised their voting rights in large numbers; they themselves were elected to public office as "sheriffs, mayors, legislators, Congressmen, and Senators"; education was provided through the construction of public schools for children of the former slavery culture; in addition they held wage-paying jobs in farming and in some of the new enterprises that were opening like telegraph, bridges and railroads.
