A mass culture is a culture that is more or less the same everywhere in a given country. This is different from a situation in which different regions have distinctive cultures. Advances in radio and movies contributed to the creation of a mass culture because they allowed people everywhere in the United States to be taking part in the same kinds of entertainment. Instead of having local music and local pastimes, everyone started to listen to the same music and shows on the radio and to watch the same movies. This was the start of a move towards a mass culture in the US.
