We are given that Owen drops a stone from the top of a mountain pass. It takes 12 seconds to reach the valley bellow, the value of acceleration due to gravity is 9.8m/s^2 and we have to find the height of the pass. Let the height of the pass be d.

Now the speed of the stone when it strikes the bottom is u + at = 0+9.8*12 = 117.6 m/s

The distance travelled is given by 1/2 ( Vf + Vi ) × t .

Here Vi = 0, Vf = 117.6 , t = 12

Therefore the height d= 117.6*(1/2)*12 = 705.6

The height of the pass is 705.6 m.
