a 341 hz tuning fork is placed over a long tube that is submerged in a column of water. The first resonance occurs at 23.2 cm and the second at 74.6 cm. Calculate the speed of sound in air during this experiment?

The resonance is a standing wave phenomenon in the air column and occurs when the column length is

`lambda/4,(3lambda)/4,(5lambda)/4,....` ,where `lambda=wavelength of the wave`

since first resonance =23.2 cm

and second resonance=74.6 cm

`(3lambda)/4-lambda/4=74.6-23.2`

`lambda/2=51.4 cm`

`lambda/2=.514 m`

`lambda=1.028m`

Thus velocity of the sound =`nlambda` , n=frequency=341hz

velocity=`341xx1.028`

`=350.548` m/s
