Use FOIL.

F:  first
O:  outside
I:  inside
L:  last

(2x - y)^2

(2x - y)(2x - y)

F:  2x * 2x = 4x^2

O:  2x * -y = -2xy

I:  -y * 2x = -2xy

L:  -y * -y = y^2

Add together.

F + O + I + L

4x^2 + (-2xy) + (-2xy) + y^2

Simplify by adding the two middle terms.

4x^2 + (-4xy) + y^2

Also correct:

4x^2 - 4xy + y^2
