Both revolutions occurred shortly after a major shift in balances of power between nations. In the French Revolution, 1789 was shortly after US Independence from Great Britain. In the Russian revolution it was shortly after crushing defeats in the early stages of World War I. Both revolution were against monarchs who were strongly favorable towards the richest in society.
