Hero tales or quest stories are almost invariably of two sorts. In the first, typified by much routine adventure fiction, the quest is almost entirely exterior to the protagonist. He or she searches for a treasure, a holy relic, or a lost sword, and, by gaining it, completes the quest. In more sophisticated tales, however, the quest is always, at least in part, interior.
