Harriet Tubman was born into slavery. She witnessed horrible treatment of slaves, and as a young girl was injured by a master as she was trying to help another slave. When her master died, she was afraid that she would be sold and be sent further south, which was a great fear for slaves. She decided to escape. Harriet made her way to freedom, but was convinced to return trip after trip to free her family along with other slaves. She felt that it wasn't right for anyone to own another person. She believed in freedom for all. In her later years, Tubman was involved in Union war efforts, women's suffrage, and equality for African Americans.
