Why did the United States intervene in Nicaraguan politics throughout the 1920s and into the 1930? What was effect of this intervention?

Posted by krishna-agrawala on Thursday September 10, 2009 at 11:34 PMIn 1911, when Nicaragua was under the rule of Adolfo Diaz, banks in USA began lending to Nicaragua under an agreement that gave them substantial control over their finances till the debt was paid off. However, USA influence was resisted by people, and to control the situation USA sent its marines to Nicaragua in 1912. These marines remained most of the time in Nicaragua till 1933, protecting USA interests and also supervising elections there.
Between 1927 and 1933 rebels led by General Augsto Cesar Sandino, fought against US marines, raiding them from secret hideouts in the mountain. During this period USA trained Nicaraguan army called the National Guard.
