It is often said that 'golf' is an acronym for "Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden." However, that cannot be the case since golf has been around since the 1400s and acronyms are a recent invention. Although there is no agreement about where the name 'golf' came from, it probably came from the early English, German and Dutch words for 'club'.
The reference to these small white spheres as 'balls' is easy. :)
