He gave writers such as Zora Neal Thurston and Langston Hughes an opportunity to publish in his magazine The Messenger. Thurman is perhaps best noted for works such as The Blacker the Berry:A Novel of Negro Life which tried to shine a light on the prejudice against color in black communities.
