The Seven Cities of Cibola are legendary cities which were supposed to be extremely overflowing with gold and precious stones, and which Spanish people sought in North America.

This myth took roots around 1150. It was rumoured that seven bishops to save their lives and to save holy scriptures fled Spain to some fare off land unknown at that time. As per the legend these priests founded the cities of Cibola and Quivira that grew very rich. Over a period as the myth became more popular the two cities became seven cities of Cibola - one for each priest.

This myth survived for many centuries and when Europeans landed in North America, there were many stories of sighting places suspected to be these cities were reported in 16th century. In response many adventurers undertook expedition to find these cities without any success.

Some more information on this subject provided by National Geographic Magazine is available at the website referred below.
