Rhode Island was considered a transcultural state in that it was a place where all people came together culturally, including the native tribes. Roger Williams was noted for maintaining peace among the tribes throughout New England. This was a great attraction for settlers. Also, Rhode Island began as a place where settlers could escape the Puritan oligarchy, a safe haven.
