    Theodore Maiman was the first to take the theory of lasers and prove that it could actually be done. He used a ruby cylinder with mirror coated ends to shine the light through. Maiman worked for Hughes Labs when he made the first laser in 1960. He felt that Hughes did not pursue lasers aggressively enough, so he left soon after to start his own company, the Korad Company, in 1961.
