"On January 11, 1964, the advisory committee released its conclusion that "cigarette smoking is a health hazard of sufficient importance in the United States to warrant appropriate remedial action."

The Surgeon General of the United States required that a warning label be placed on all cigarette packs.  It said:

"Caution: Cigarette Smoking May Be Hazardous to Your Health."

"The request was followed by the 1964 release of the first report on smoking and health by the U.S. Surgeon General. That pivotal report identified smoking as a cause of lung cancer and heart disease."
