The desire of the Greeks to "own the world" was one motivation for all of their expansion.  The more specific motives were caused by their lack of natural resources, need for farming land, and desire to control a method of passage from Greece to other lands.  the Greeks had very few natural resources.  To gain these resources they had to look elsewhere.  The also needed good land to farm and grow crops.  The Greeks wanted to spread their culture and increase control over less cultured and less educated people.
