Many of the first major civilizations were settled in river valleys for the purpose of being near a source of fresh water as well as for the fertile farm land surrounding the fresh water source. Another civilizations that settled in a river valley were the Mesopotamian's.

The reason for this is the rivers provided people a ready source of fresh water for drinking and gor agriculture. Also soils along the rivers are generally fertile, and thus more suitable for farming. Rivers also provided a source of fishes for food.
River valleys also provided plane terain where life is easier as compared to hilly terrain.
