In olden times civilizations settled along the river, no only in India, but all over the world. The reason for this is the rivers provided people a ready source of fresh water for drinking and gor agriculture. Also soils along the rivers are generally fertile, and thus more suitable for farming. Rivers also provided a source of fishes for food.

River valleys also provided plane terain where life is easier as compared to hilly terrain.
