The U.S. system of healthcare which is dissected in Michael Moore's documentary infers that in some cases, doctors may be violating their hippocratic oath by refusing treatment for some patients who could benefit from it. However, you have to remember that you are watching a well produced, persuasive piece of propaganda, designed specifically to skewer the American health system and persuade audiences that the Canadian, British and Cuban health care systems are better. More does an excellent job of using pathos to convince audiences of the weaknesses of the American health care system. I'm not saying the American health care system is perfect, far from it. But to say it makes doctors violate the Hippocratic oath is introducing a "red herring" into the argument. The Canadian, British and Cuban health care systems also have their problems, including long waits for elective surgery, and bureaucratic red tape that plagues the American system, too. The real question is how to fix the problem. Is government control a solution or are there better ways of improving the system? That question is one that needs to be debated in a calmer, more thoughtful atmosphere than an emotional, tear-jerking documentary. Posted by ms-mcgregor on Nov 24, 2008. |
