What were the Union and the Confederacy?

The Union was the name for states in the North that fought against the Confederacy, an alliance of states in the South, during the American Civil War (1861–65; also called the War Between the States). The Confederacy, the name commonly given to the Confederate States of America, was formed by states that seceded (withdrew) from the United States (the Union). The Confederate states, in order of secession, were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. States that remained in the Union were Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oregon, and California.
