What happened to the Philippines after the islands were given up to the United States?

After the United States gained control of the Philippines in the Treaty of Paris (1898), the Pacific archipelago (island group) was soon embroiled in a conflict similar to the independence movement in Cuba, which had resulted in the Spanish-American War (1898). Filipinos, determined to achieve independence, revolted in an uprising that lasted from 1899 until 1901. A civil government was established on the Philippines in 1901; thirty-four years later the Commonwealth of the Philippines was officially established. The islands continued to be the site of conflict in the coming decades, however, as the United States again struggled with Japan for control of the islands during World War II (1939–45).
