Most of the battles in the American Revolution (1775–83; a conflict in which the American colonies gained independence from Great Britain) took place in the Northeast (called the North), a region that includes present-day New England and New York. Yet the conflict also expanded into the southern colonies (now called the South), an area that includes present-day Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
