Many expect that Mother Teresa, an Albanian nun who adopted India as her homeland, will be sainted (declared holy by the Roman Catholic Church). Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Albania, Mother Teresa (1910–1997) entered the religious life at age eighteen and took the name Sister Teresa. She spent nearly seventy years working as a missionary among the poor and the last fifty in outreach to the impoverished sick and dying. In 1950 she founded the order of Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India. Two years later she opened a home for the dying poor, and the following year she started her first orphanage. The children at the orphanage were the first to call her Mother Teresa. Although some have criticized Mother Teresa for doing little to solve the root problems of poverty and for accepting donations from possibly questionable sources, others have called her a living saint.
