How did Silent Spring influence the environmental protection movement?

In Silent Spring (1962) American marine biologist Rachel Carson (1907–1964) questioned the use of chemical pesticides, which she believed damaged the environment. The book became a best seller, raising awareness of the dangers of chemicals and leading to the formation of environmental protection movements (also called green movements) in many countries. Carson was an aquatic biologist with the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (later renamed the Fish and Wildlife Service); her other works include Under the Sea, The Sea Around Us, and The Edge of the Sea.
