Did slavery end when the slave trade was outlawed in Britain?
In 1807 the British Parliament (the country's law-making body) heeded the demands of a growing number of abolitionists (those who advocated ending slavery) and made slave trading. In 1833 the British government abolished the slave trade in its colonies. Although trading in slaves was outlawed in the United States as early as 1808, owning slaves was still legal until after the American Civil War (1861–65). Yet despite the fact that nearly all countries of the world had passed laws against slavery by the end of the twentieth century, slavery still exists. At least 200,000,000 people are enslaved worldwide, particularly in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Forms of slavery include forced child labor, debt bondage, and chattel slavery.
