Who were the great Islamic philosophers of the Middle Ages?
Avicenna (980–1037; real name Ibn Sina) and Averroes (1126–1198; real name Ibn Rushd) are the most famous Islamic (a name for followers of the Islam religion) thinkers of the Middle Ages (c. 450–c. 1500). Avicenna was a philosopher and medical doctor to several sultans (rulers) in his homeland of Persia (now Iran). He wrote more than two hundred works on science, medicine, politics, religion, and philosophy. His massive encyclopedia The Kitab al-shifa (The Book of Healing) was the largest single collection of knowledge written by one person during the Middle Ages. The work included sections on logic (the use of reason in thought processes), natural philosophy (physical science), mathematics, and metaphysics (the fundamental nature of human reality).
