Was the Titanic the most disastrous shipwreck in history?
Although the sinking of the Titanic, in which more than 1,500 people lost their lives, is the most famous shipwreck, it pales in comparison with other wrecks in which more lives were lost. The best-known example is the explosion of the Sultana, a paddle-wheel steamboat traveling the Mississippi River between St. Louis, Missouri, and New Orleans, Louisiana. The boat exploded in April 1865, killing 1,653 of the estimated 2,300 people on board. Another disastrous explosion took place in 1917 during World War I (1914-19) in the harbor at Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Norwegian ship Imo crashed into the French munitions (weapons and ammunition) ship Mont Blanc, which was carrying thousands of tons of explosives.
