What is the only U.S. state that does not use common law?
Of all the states of the United States, only Louisiana does not use common law to decide private cases (called civil law). For many years Louisiana was a French colony and adopted the French legal system, which was based on the Justinian Code, the laws of the Roman Empire, which were published during the reign of Roman Emperor Justinian (A.D. 483–565).
