Queen Victoria (1819–1901) had the longest reign of any British monarch. She was crowned at age eighteen in June 1837 upon the death of her uncle, King William IV (1765–1837), and ruled until her own death in 1901. During her sixty-four-year reign Victoria presided over the rise of industrialization in Great Britain as well as British expansion abroad. Architecture, art, and literature flourished, partly as a result of the influence and interests of her husband, Prince Albert (1819–1861). In 1851 Albert sponsored the first world fair, the Great Exhibition, at the Crystal Palace in London. The Crystal Palace remained a symbol of the Victorian Age until it was destroyed by fire in 1936.
