How was the Soviet Union formed?

In 1922 Russia joined with the Ukraine, Belorussia (now Belarus), and the Transcaucasian Federation (Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia) to become the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.). By 1940 Estonia, Kazakstan, Kirghiz (now Kyrgystan), Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia (now Moldova), Tadzhikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan also had joined the Soviet Union, making a total of fifteen republics.
