Why did Spain authorize Columbus to search for a westward route to the Indies?

The Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand V (1452–1516) and Queen Isabella I (1451–1504) authorized Italian explorer Christopher Columbus (1451–1506) to search for a sea route to the Indies (India and its adjacent lands in the Far East) so they could re-establish trade in spices. Europeans needed spices, especially cloves, to help preserve meat and cover the bad taste when it spoiled (without better preservation methods, people were forced to eat spoiled meat). The main routes to spice markets were in the Mediterranean Sea. The only other passage to China was overland from Constantinople (present-day Istanbul, Turkey), and it took three years round trip.
