Who were the first Europeans to explore the Mississippi River?
Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto (c. 1500–1542), French priest Jacques Marquette (1637–1675), and French explorer René-Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle (1643–1687) all explored the Mississippi River area. De Soto ventured throughout southeastern North America before he reached the southern portion of the Mississippi River. Later serving in an expedition that conquered the Inca Empire in what is now Peru, de Soto was appointed governor of Cuba. Authorized by Spanish king Charles I (1500–1558) to explore and conquer the territory that is now the southeastern United States, de Soto landed in Florida in the winter of 1539.
