Who was Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca?

Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca (c.1490–c. 1560) was a Spanish explorer who was lured to the Americas by tales of the treasure to be found in the New World (the European term for North America and South America). In 1527 Cabeza de Vaca joined an expedition that landed in Florida at the site of present-day Tampa Bay. During the overland march to Apalachee Bay en route to Mexico, half of the three hundred men in the expedition died. Cabeza de Vaca emerged as the leader of a small band of survivors. They built a barge and sailed across the Gulf of Mexico, landing on islands off the Texas coast, where their ship was destroyed and they were captured by Native Americans. When Cabeza de Vaca and three others escaped in 1535, they trekked on foot through what is today the southeastern United States and northern Mexico. Finally, the group reached a Spanish settlement in Mexico.
