Who said, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"

The speaker was Welsh explorer and journalist Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841–1904). He addressed this famous question in 1871 to Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813–1873), who had been out of contact with the world for several years. Stanley worked as a foreign correspondent for the New York Herald and led an expedition sponsored by the newspaper to find Livingstone in the lake region of Central Africa. After Stanley located the ailing Livingstone and nursed him back to health, the two men explored Central Africa together. Stanley continued his explorations alone, following the course of the Congo River to the Atlantic Ocean, a 2,000-mile (3,218-kilometer) journey through tropical terrain.
