When did the space age begin?
The space age—the period in which spacecrafts have been placed in orbit around the Earth—began on October 4, 1957, when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik (later called Sputnik I ), the first artificial satellite (an object that orbits a planet). Sputnik took pictures of the far side of the Moon, which were met with a mixture of shock and respect from the rest of the world. Soviet premier (leader) Nikita Krushchev (1894–1971) immediately approved funding for follow-up space projects. Leaders in the United States and Europe were determined not to be outdone by the Soviets in exploring space, considered the last frontier since all territories on Earth had been mapped, so they also vowed to support space programs in their own countries.
