What was the Lost Colony?

The Lost Colony was the second English settlement in North America, located on Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina. It was founded in 1587. The Roanoke inhabitants disappeared without a trace, thus posing the most mysterious incident in early American history. While scholars have proposed numerous theories regarding their fate, no one knows for sure what happened.

In 1585 Sir Walter Raleigh (1554–1618) sent about one hundred men to found the first English colony in America on Roanoke Island. At the time England was engaged in war with Spain, and Roanoke appeared to be a good location to repair English warships. Soon the settlers learned that the land was not fertile enough to support them and their Native American neighbors. Serious food shortages and conflicts with the Native Americans resulted.
